Atruim Pancake House in Gatlinburg

Free parking is hard to come by in Gatlinburg, so any place that offers free parking on site is a plus to me. The Atruim Pancake House, 432 Parkway in Gatlinburg not only offers free on site parking, but if seated in the back room a view of a beautiful waterfall. The Baked Apple Pancakes are the house specialty and have been featured in Taste of Home Magazine.

The Atrium Pancake House offers a decent selection of pancakes including Chocolate Covered Strawberry, Coconut Chocolate Chip and Red, White and Blue Roll Ups ( Strawberry, bannana and Blueberry).

Prices are resonable and service was good.

Pancakes/ 45 Types of Breakfast

A few doors down from the Comedy Barn on the Parkway in Pigeon Forge, sits the Pancake House. The sign on the roof of the building reads PANCAKE, and the sign out front reads Pancakes/ 45 types of breakfast. At first glance one thinks 45 types of pancake, there are 16 different pancakes on the menu. My mistake the sign said ' 45 types of breakfast'not pancakes. There is no other identifying name anywhere inside or out so we will call the place Pancakes.

The place looks small from the outside, don't be deceived, there is plenty of seats. The pancakes were really good, light, fluffy and perfectly cooked. Prices aren't bad either, 2 pancakes for $2.95, one egg with bacon or sausage and pancakes for $5.95. Toast, biscuits, hash brown potatoes or grits may be subsituted for pancakes.

Service was good, food was good, prices were good. Opens at 7 a.m.

Pancake Pantry

The Pancake Pantry in Gatlinburg claims to be the first pancake house in Tennessee.Since opening in 1960, The Pancake Pantry is the most popular pancake house in Gatlinburg, and one visit will tell you why.

On a recent visit we found twenty five different varieties of pancakes, with everything on the menu made from scratch. A longtime favorite is the Austrian Apple-Walnut Pancakes covered with apple cider compote made with black walnuts, apples, melted buttter and spices then topped with whipped cream. Fast forward to today and try the raspberry and choclate pancake with crushed oreo cookie topping.

Prices start at $5.95 for plain buttermilk pancakes and go to $9.95 for speciality cakes and crepes. They are family friendly and offer a children's menu. Service is professional.

The Pancake Pantry does not accept credit or debit cards, but does have an ATM machine inside. Parking in Gatlinburg is also a problem so either catch the trolley ($2.00) at the Gatlinburg Visitor's Center or be prepared to pay a parking fee ($5.00-$8.00)downtown.

Pancakes, Pancakes, Pancakes???

One of the first thing visitors to the towns surrounding the Smokey Mountains notice is the exorbitant numbers of restaurants specializing in pancakes. To visitors Pigeon Forge has to be the pancake capitol of the universe. Names like The Log Cabin Pancake House, Flapjacks Pancake Cabin, Log Cabin Pancake House, Red Rooster Pancake House, Smokey Mountain Pancake House , and  Smokey's Pancake House
draw hungry visitors in for pancakes.

As to why Pigeon Forge is the pancake capitol of the world, no one seems to know, although everyone has their own ideas. At the Pigeon Forge Visitors Center my question regarding the origins of the pancake house was recieved with a puzzled look by the gentlemen behind the desk. Looking at me as if I were from outer space he said, " Most people are here on vacation and pancakes are a comfort food and pancakes make them feel good."

I asked lots of people; people that were born and raised here, owners and staff at the pancake house and Google. No one had the answer as to how Pigeon Forge became the Pancake Capitol and I guess it dosen't matter .

The only thing I do know is that it is impossible to visit the Smokey Mountains and not eat at least one time in one of the many Pancake Houses that grace the area.

Howdy!!!

10 million people visit the Smokey Mountains each year and they all have to eat ...but where?'Where to Eat Pancakes in Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and Sevierville' will give you inside tips on where to find the best of the best pancake houses in the Smoky Mountains.
